The demise of steam on British Railways was a rapid affair and the BR workshops were unable to cope with the number of locomotives being made redundant and scrapped. Many private operators became involved in the scrapping of these locomotives. A typical example is featured below, the Central Wagon Company in Wigan, and a wide variety of locos met their end here.
